You shrink a photo for a blog post or stretch a small logo to fit a banner, and suddenly it looks soft, blurry, or slightly off. Resizing is one of the most common image edits, and it’s where quality quietly disappears. The rules for avoiding that are simple once you understand what’s happening to the pixels. The rule that matters most: scaling down is safe, scaling up is not

Every image is a grid of pixels. When you make an image smaller, you’re discarding pixels you don’t need. The software has plenty of detail to work with, so the result stays crisp. A 4000-pixel-wide photo shrunk to 1200 pixels will look great.

When you make an image larger, the opposite happens. There are no extra pixels hiding inside the file, so the software has to invent them by estimating the colors between existing pixels. This is called interpolation, and it can only guess. The result tends to look soft or mushy, especially around edges and text.

The practical takeaway: start from the largest version of your image you have and resize down to what you need. If you only have a small image and need a bigger one, accept that it won’t gain real detail. Keep the aspect ratio (unless you mean to distort)

The aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height. Change one without the other and the image stretches or squishes, which makes people and objects look noticeably wrong.

The right size depends entirely on where the image will be seen.

For the web, pixel dimensions are what count. A full-width blog image rarely needs to be more than about 1600 to 2000 pixels wide; anything larger just wastes bandwidth and slows the page. Resizing down to a sensible width is one of the easiest ways to speed up a site.

For social media, each platform has its own preferred sizes, and they change over time. As a rough guide, square posts around 1080 x 1080 pixels and shared-link images around 1200 x 630 pixels cover most cases. When in doubt, give the platform a slightly larger image than the display size and let it scale down.

For print, think in inches and DPI (dots per inch) rather than screen pixels. Print typically wants about 300 DPI, so a 6 x 4 inch print needs roughly 1800 x 1200 pixels. This is where the no-upscaling rule bites hardest: if your photo is only 800 pixels wide, it will print soft no matter what you type into the DPI field. The pixels simply aren’t there.

A note on file size and format: resizing the dimensions usually shrinks the file, but the format matters too. JPEG and WebP use lossy compression, so re-saving the same file repeatedly can degrade it over many rounds. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it the better pick for graphics, logos, and text, though it produces much larger files for photos. Either way, resize once from your best original rather than editing and re-saving the same file again and again.
