Someone with an iPhone sends you a photo, you tap to open it on your Android phone, and you get an error, a blank thumbnail, or a file your gallery refuses to show. The file name probably ends in .heic. The fix is to convert it to JPG, and you can do that on your phone without installing anything.

Why an iPhone HEIC photo won’t open on Android

  • Many third-party apps, web upload forms, printing kiosks, and older messaging tools still reject HEIC even when your phone itself can read it.

So a HEIC file isn’t broken. It’s just in a format the thing you’re trying to use doesn’t understand. Converting to JPG sidesteps the whole compatibility question, because JPG works everywhere.

One thing worth knowing: a HEIC file can hold extra data such as Live Photo motion or depth information, and some files store more than one image. A standard conversion turns the main still image into a normal JPG and drops those extras, which is exactly what you want for sharing or uploading.

  • Keep the original if you might want it later. Converting creates a new JPG; it doesn’t delete the HEIC. Holding onto the original keeps the smaller, higher-efficiency copy around.

Stop the problem at the source (optional)

If you’re the one taking the iPhone photos and you’re tired of friends not being able to open them, change the camera setting. On the iPhone, open Settings, tap Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG instead of HEIC. Existing HEIC files still need converting, but you won’t create new ones.
